Zugzwang

Zugzwang ('compulsion to move') is a situation found in chess and other turn-based games wherein one player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move; a player is said to be "in zugzwang" when any legal move will worsen their position.

Key Aspects of Zugzwang:
Forced Disadvantage: The player in zugzwang is not necessarily in check, but every available move leads to a deterioration of their position.

Endgame Focus: Zugzwang most often occurs in endgames, particularly in pawn endings, where having to move a king or pawn away from a defensive position allows the opponent to win.

Turn-Based Pressure: It is a key concept where the obligation to move (the core rule of chess) acts against the player whose turn it is.
